The announcement of Costa Rica’s digital nomad visa is right around the corner. Just last week the government signed the decree that was promulgated into law in October 2021.

So hold your breath wanderlust nomads, your pura vida adventure in the lush, bio-diverse landscape of Costa Rica is moments away.

What are the Benefits of a Digital Nomad Visa in Costa Rica?

As with many Digital Nomad Visas the process is meant to be straightforward and appealing for both nomads and remote workers. Unlike a tourist visa, it also provides you with the ability to establish a local bank account as well as tap into other benefits such as long-term rental agreements.

The guidelines for the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa should be released next week, but some of the fundamental features seem promising and aligned with other digital nomad visas.

How long can I stay in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica’s Digital Nomad Visa is valid for a one year stay; however, the visa can be extended for an additional year as long as the holder spent at least 180 days within Costa Rica throughout year one.

What is the total cost of the digital nomad visa?

The cost of the visa is still not official, but the Costa Rican government says there will be a significant fee. Whether such fee is an application fee or to be paid upon successful admission is yet to be determined.

What are the basic requirements for the Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa?

The main requirement is proof of a minimum stable income. Individuals must show at least $3000 (USD) monthly while families need $4000 per month.

You must also prove that you maintain health insurance before traveling and for the entire duration of your stay. Proof of accommodations is encouraged for the visa interview.

Costa Rica Digital Nomad Visa vs. Tourist Visa?

Many nationalities, including U.S. citizens, can easily travel to Costa Rica. For those considering a longer-stay and to perhaps work remotely the digital nomad visa could be a great option.

The digital nomad visa will permit you to live AND work in Costa Rica. It also has an extended period of stay that is available. In addition, you can establish a bank account in Costa Rica and if your goal is to potentially stay longer and obtain residency, the digital nomad visa will put you on that path.

Do I need an Immigration Lawyer in Costa Rica?

This depends. Most digital nomad visas are meant to be simple and streamlined. However, since the guidelines have not been released it is too soon to say. This will also depend on your own circumstances – those who are employed abroad or do not seem to meet the minimum income requirements should at least seek a consultation with a qualified professional to ensure eligibility.

Paying taxes in Costa Rica is a different story. It will depend on how long you remain in Costa Rica and/or outside of your own country. We encourage you to learn more about double-taxation treaties and speak with a qualified tax professional that might be able to provide valuable insight.
