ETIAS is a new system to make travel within the EU and Schengen area easier for those travellers arriving from outside the EU. Especially British visitors who are interested in coming to the EU for travel or work purposes will find the new system to be much quicker and more convenient.

Following our article from last week, you already know that ETIAS is an electronic system that is keeping track of visitors from countries outside the EU who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen zone. Currently, there are 63 countries in the world with a visa-free regime to travel to Schengen areas, and citizens of these countries may enter the Schengen zone for up 90 days for business or travel purposes.

This means that British travellers will be obliged to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver/ authorisation as well.

Contrary to what British tabloids like to call it, ETIAS is not actually a visa. Instead, it is a visa waiver/ authorisation done online where you only upload a scan of your passport and then pay the fee.

Obtaining the visa waiver/ authorisation takes about 15 minutes and costs just €7, which is much cheaper than paying a visa fee, and the process is much easier than applying for a visa.

With ETIAS, Britons can enter the EU and Schengen area as many times as they would like and need, as long as they meet the criteria of 90 days in a 180 day period. The ETIAS authorisation will be valid for three years with a possibility of issue for longer periods.
